CNHA Huaka'i
to Honaunau Ipu Farm on the Island of Hawaii
The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement's Huaka'i
Program is traveling to the island of Hawaii to learn
the Niihau method of gourd decorating from the Hawaii
Gourd Society and Honaunau Ipu Farm. Participants will
attend a four-hour workshop on gourd decoration and will
get their own gourd to decorate and take home.
Fifteen years ago, through research and trial and error,
Bruce Kaimiloa Chrisman rediscovered the technique behind
the Niihau method of gourd decoration. As this ancient
process was unknown for most of the 20th century, the
Hawaii Gourd Society is now dedicated to perpetuating
education about this art form.
This unique Huaka'i will be held from 10:30 am to 2:30
pm on Sunday, November 18th, at the Honaunau Ipu Farm
on the island of Hawaii. The farm is located at 84-5215
City of Refuge Road, the first two driveways after the
Honaunau Rodeo Grounds. The special discounted cost to
participants is $50.
Spaces are limited. Participants must register by Wednesday,
November 14th. The registration form is available at
http://www.hawaiiancouncil.org/docs/echo/dhuakai0711ipu.pdf.
To register via phone, or for more information, contact
CNHA Community Development Specialist Max Kopper at 521.5011
on Oahu or toll-free at 800.709.2642.
This Huaka'i is partially funded through an
ECHO grant received by the Bishop Museum from the Office
of Innovation
and Improvement of the U.S. Department of Education.
Education through Cultural & Historical Organizations
(ECHO) provides educational enrichment to Native and
non-Native children and lifelong learners.

Aloha Hawaii Gourd Society members and
friends...

This has been a wonderful growing season, our ipu crops
are flourishing and our HGS membership has grown. If
you would like green ipu for carving, there are several
shapes available, now. Kindly write back and I will connect
you with the ipu. Average price is $15 each.
Ni'ihau decorating method class will be held at the
Honaunau Ipu Farm Oct. 28th and again on Nov. 4th. We
will have green ipu to purchase for working on. Member
fee for class is $35...non-member $50.
Both of the above mentioned dates are on a Sunday, we
hope this is a better day for a South Kona visit, picnic & class...
and since the farm is close to two-step (City of Refuge),
an after class swim is an option. Class hours
are still flexible.
Hawaii Gourd Society now has
a "Parent corporation",
Ipu Lani, Inc. 501(c)(3). Ipu Lani, Inc. will be working
hard to assist funding Hawaii Gourd Society activities.
Donations to HGS are now tax deductible!
Second Gourds in Paradise Festival
- Jan. 10-13, 2008 - On the 12th & 13th will
be open to the public at the Hale Halewai Pavilion,
Kailua-Kona,
HI.
If you are interested in being a vendor or would like
to volunteer to help, please let us know. We would love
to have your input! Our web-site is continuously updating
information and we will be adding classes throughout
the rest of the year, so, check back often. There will
be classes offered at the Honaunau Ipu Farm on Jan. 10 & 11,
2008. Our classes for this festival will include ipu
heke', ipu heke 'ole, Ni'ihau decorating method, and
hokiokio (nose flute).
We will be happy to receive your input for the festival...feel
free to express yourself!
